What are council tax arrears?
Utility arrears build up when payments for gas, electricity, or water fall behind. With rising household costs, this has become an increasingly common type of debt across the UK.
How does it build up?
Arrears often build gradually a missed direct debit here, an underestimated bill there until the total owed becomes difficult to catch up on, especially alongside other rising costs.
Priority or non-priority?
Gas and electricity arrears are generally treated as priority debts, since suppliers have the power to disconnect your supply or move you to a prepayment meter. Water arrears are usually treated as non-priority, though suppliers can still take you to court to recover what’s owed.
What happens if you don't pay?
Your supplier may add your arrears onto your ongoing bills, increasing what you pay each cycle.
You could be moved onto a prepayment meter, sometimes at a higher cost.
In serious cases, gas or electricity suppliers can apply to disconnect your supply though this is meant to be a last resort, and extra protections apply to vulnerable households.
Water suppliers can pursue court action for unpaid debt.
